Located in the northwestern corner of the state and about 25 miles south of the shores of Lake Erie, the city of Edinboro, PA, is a great place to stay while exploring the nearby nature reserves and scenic state parks of the region. 1. Presque Isle State Park

A beautiful 3,000-acre nature reserve covering the territory of a small peninsula on Lake Erie, Presque Isle State Park is a top-rated destination for Edinboro locals. Established in 1921 and designated a U.S. National Natural Landmark in 1967, this state park offers excellent opportunities for numerous recreational activities including boating, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and water skiing.

Presque Isle State Park is located a little over 20 miles north of downtown Edinboro and can be reached in about half an hour by car along route I-79. Some of the facilities you can find in this public recreation area include a 500-slip marina, several swimming beaches, a series of hiking trails, boat launches, and fishing piers. During the winter months, this state park is a popular spot for ice fishing and ice skating.

2. Allegheny National Forest

Located a little over 50 miles southeast of downtown Edinboro, Allegheny National Forest is another expansive nature reserve spanning over half a million acres in northwestern Pennsylvania. Established in 1923, this place is not only an excellent day trip spot for Edinboro locals, but also a well-known destination for nature lovers from all over the country.

Whether you are into outdoor sports or simply want to spend some relaxing time away from the city, Allegheny National Forest is a great place to visit. Featuring lakes, creeks, hiking trails, picnic areas, campgrounds, boat launches, and beautiful viewpoints, this nature reserve has something to offer for all types of visitors. Getting here from the Edinboro city center takes about one hour by car along State Highway 8.

3. Maurice K. Goddard State Park

Established in 1972 and covering an area of almost 3,000 acres, Maurice K. Goddard State Park is another expansive nature reserve that can be reached in about 40 minutes by car from downtown Edinboro. Welcoming over 200,000 visitors each year, this state park features swimming beaches along the shores of Lake Wilhelm, as well as excellent opportunities for wildlife watching, picnicking, fishing, and other recreational activities.
