Off-Road Capability of the 2022 Wagoneer

Presented by Cunningham CDJR

Upon its introduction in 1963, the Wagoneer quickly gained recognition as the pinnacle of luxury and capability. The Wagoneer was the first vehicle to pair a 4x4 drivetrain to an automatic transmission as well as combine luxurious features like air conditioning, AM/FM/CB radio, leather interior, and more. All of this was never seen in the same place before at the time. For the 2022 model year, the Wagoneer has returned as an extension of the Jeep brand bringing the same level of incredible modern features all in one place! Jeep went all out when planning the 2022 Wagoneer's off-road capability. In fact, consumers can choose from three of the best 4x4 systems that Jeep offers. And not many other manufacturers know 4x4 like Jeep! All Wagoneer models will come with a powerful 5.7L V8 engine that kicks out 392 horsepower and 404 lb-ft of torque. The 2022 Wagoneer is also available with Quadra-Lift Air Suspension and Selec-Terrain Traction Management System! What's that, you ask? Well continue reading below as we take an in-depth look at all the amazing features that will return the Wagoneer nameplate to the top of the class!

What Are the Different Types of 4x4 Systems?

Quadra-Trac I: Quadra-Trac I is a full-time 4x4 system, giving drivers four-wheel capability without needing to flip a switch or pull a lever. It utilizes a network of sensors to detect wheel slippage as it happens and send up to 100% of available torque to the axle with the most traction using a single-speed transfer case.
Quadra-Trac II:
Quadra-Trac II operates similarly to Quadra-Trac I but uses a two-speed transfer case and also employs Active 4-Low for low-speed crawling.
Quadra-Drive II:
Instead of using a mechanical limited-slip differential, Quadra-Drive II uses an electronic limited-slip rear differential. Combined with a two-speed transfer case, this allows the system to predict wheel slippage and redistribute torque instantly to limit and in some cases even prevent wheel slip.

What is Quadra-Lift?

Quadra-Lift Air Suspension is capable of providing the Wagoneer 3.6 inches of lift travel using four-corner air springs. This system was the obvious choice to give drivers a smooth, air-cushioned ride on varying road conditions. Not only this, but the extensive lift span provides mind-blowing capability! Quadra-Lift defaults to Normal Ride Height (NRH) which is 8 inches of ground clearance. When Off-Road 1 is selected, the air springs will raise the ride height one inch, increasing ground clearance to 9 inches. For those big rocks or logs in the way, Off-Road 2 brings the ride height to a towering 10 inches of ground clearance. Back to the road we go with Aero mode. This lowers the ride height by 0.6 inches to 7.4 inches of ground clearance to provide optimal fuel economy while giving the driver a fun driving experience. Park mode lowers the Wagoneer's height 1.6 inches to 6.4 inches of ground clearance to make getting in and out of the Wagoneer a breeze for all passengers.

How Does Selec-Terrain Work?

Selec-Terrain is Jeep's iconic traction management system. It includes five different modes, Auto, Snow, Sport, Rock, and Sand/Mud, to provide maximum traction in any environment. Auto allows the 4x4 system to sense road conditions and adjust itself and the Quadra-Lift system to adapt to the current road surface. Snow mode adjusts the traction control and transfer case to provide drivers with confidence on snow-covered roads. Sport mode is available at the turn of a dial and will lower Quadra-Lift to Aero mode and adjusts throttle control and transmission shift points for maximum performance. Rock mode raises the Quadra-Lift system to Off-Road 2 and adjusts the transfer case, throttle control, and differentials to give off-roaders low-speed crawling. Lastly, Sand/Mud mode optimizes the traction control system to react to wheelspin and seamlessly transfer torque to the wheels with the most traction.
