Modern automatic transmissions are remarkably complex pieces of machinery. If you notice any of the following signs of transmission issues, visit your closest Chrysler dealer without delay for transmission repair before the problem gets any worse.

Low or Leaking Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid is the lifeblood of your gearbox. By lubricating the hundreds of internal moving parts, maintaining hydraulic pressure, combating rust and corrosion, and cleaning out tiny fragments of metal, the fluid keeps your transmission alive. If transmission fluid is allowed to age and deteriorate, it stops performing its job and your gearbox will rapidly start to break down. And leaking transmission fluid is an even more immediate threat to your gearbox.

If you ever smell a burning plastic smell, check that your transmission fluid isn’t getting too old or low in volume. Many of the other issues mentioned below are also caused by low or aging fluid and can be remedied by flushing the fluid. Leaking transmission fluid is likely to leave puddles under your car or smears on engine parts under the hood. You’ll need to have a leak found and repaired before topping up the fluid.

Humming, Grinding, Revving Sounds

Strange sounds coming from below are usually a sign of transmission trouble, especially if you hear them when you’re shifting gears. Humming or whining noises may indicate a malfunctioning torque converter, a clogged transmission line, or worn-out gears inside the planetary gear system.

Clunky grinding noises may indicate low transmission fluid or a worse problem like rounded-out gears. And if your engine starts revving loudly when you’re shifting, it means some of your gears are no longer moving smoothly into their new setting. Any of these sounds should prompt a quick visit to your nearest dealership for a check-up.

Delayed, Sticking, or Slipping Gears

The clearest sign of transmission problems is misbehaving gears when you’re trying to shift. If your gears are hesitating a few seconds to shift, sticking and refusing to shift, or slipping and shifting all on their own, there’s no doubt that your transmission has a fault. You’ll need a technician to take a look right away.

Have Periodic Transmission Service at Your Chrysler Dealer

As with any car part, the key to maintaining good transmission health is regular visits for servicing. The most important transmission servicing task is having the fluid flushed out and replaced. The transmission pan, plug, gasket, sump pump, and filter also need to be cleaned and repaired or replaced if necessary.
